The Nigerian Senate has threatened to arrest the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, if he fails to appear before the adhoc committee investigating various allegations leveled against the police and the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Senator Francis Alimikhena, the chairman of the adhoc committee, said the police boss was summoned to appear before the Senate panel on October 16 to respond to allegations made against him by Senator Isah Hamman Misau. Alimikhena insisted that nobody including the law courts can stop the Senate from carrying out its constitutional duties. He said the 1999 constitution as amended guaranteed separation of powers among the arms of government.
In another related news, Senator Isah Misau (APC-Bauchi Central) stated that the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, bought two Prado SUV’s for Aisha Buhari, wife of the president. The lawmaker made his comments when he appeared before the Senate committee mandated to probe the IGP.
Misau stated that Idris had purchased the vehicles which were not allocated in the budget, for Mrs Buhari’s personal use, even when she had asked for a Sienna and Hiace. The senator further told his colleagues that the IGP had manipulated his retirement date on the list for senior police officers. If any police officer misbehaves
