- Soldier writes President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged corruption in the army - The defence ministry says funds have been released to pay the third quarter operational allowances of soldiers partaking in various military operations - The chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, dispatches special message of assurance, encouragement and commendation to troops
The federal government has released the funds for the payment of operational allowances of thousands of Nigerian soldiers fighting in several military operations in the country.
This was after an unknown soldier wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari over the alleged corruption in the army. The soldier claimed that this was the third month in a row that they had been denied operations allowance. He said the soldiers were in debt because the salaries are not enough to sustain them at the battlefront and feeding their families back at home.
However, the ministry of defence on Monday, November 6, said the funds released was to be used to pay the third quarter operational allowance of soldiers partaking in international peace-keeping and peace-enforcement operations in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan and in several theaters of operation including Operations Lafiya Dole, Sharan Daji, Harbin Kunama and the recently concluded special security operations in the south-south and south west, Vanguard reports.
Meanwhile, the chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has dispatched a special message of assurance, encouragement and commendation to troops of the Nigerian army engaged in various operations both within and outside the country.
This is reportedly contained in a letter sent to various formations and corps commanders, as well as commanders of the various training institutions of the Nigerian army on Sunday, November 5, 2017. According to the army spokesperson, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, Buratai showered encomiums on the troops for the unflinching loyalty, perseverance, courage and dedication to duty which brought about the desired success in the fight against terrorism, insurgency and other criminal activities.
He also paid glowing tribute to those troops stationed outside the shores of our great nation. Buratai has also assured troops especially those on Operation Lafiya Dole of their welfare. This is coming from the good news of the release of funds for the payment of operational allowances and logistics for the Third Quarter 2017 from the Ministry of Defence. He further stated that this would facilitate the payment of operational allowances owed to them for the last 2 months this week accordingly.
