A 10-year-old boy has been reportedly shot dead at Owerri, the Imo state capital, after security men opened fire on protesters during the demolition of popular Eke-Ukwu market.

According to Reports Afrique, trouble started when traders at the market attempted to stop the demolition leading to sporadic shootings by the security personnel leading to many deaths caused by stray bullets.

A nurse who works with the Federal Medical centre in Owerri narrated the ugly ordeal the hospital is faced with in attending to victims of gun wounds from the incidents on her Facebook page stated thus:

“What a world! What a country!, what a govt! I had an emergency case this morning, l rushed off to FMC owerri despite the clean up exercise. At FMC, as my patient has been attended to. The hospital turned into a military hospital where several people with bullet wounds were rushed in. Their stories- Army Men at around Ekeonuwaa Market by Douglas shot them. I was still trying to comprehend when a 10yr old boy was rushed in. The boy had left their house to go and assist his mother pack their wares. A bullet from a trigger happy Army man hit the boy. A good samaritan rushed the the boy but it was soooo late. An only son of a_ trying to survive family. Everyone in Fmc this morning has cried out their eyes. Ohh God help your Children”

Recall that the State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has been in a protracted move to relocate the market from Douglas road to a different location of the city. The governor has presented his case citing the traffic problems constituted by trading activities at the popular Douglas road as one of his reasons.
