On Tuesday, August 22, Russia announced that it has signed a military cooperation agreement with Nigeria and Niger, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The Russia-Nigeria deal allows Nigerian servicemen to be trained in Russia's military educational establishments. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the two countries will pay special attention to joint training of troops, exchange of peacekeeping experience, and fighting against piracy and terrorism.

Shoigu also said it "will promote further improvement of cooperation and strengthen the two militaries in the fight against international terrorism." Also, Shoigu held separate talks with his counterparts from the two African countries on the sidelines of the Army 2017 International Military-Technical Forum that kicked off Tuesday outside Moscow.

Nigeria's president Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the Service Chiefs to tackle the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)’s secret army, Boko Haram and various security threats plaguing the country.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisakin revealed that was the issue discussed at the closed-door meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Service Chiefs. President Buhari earlier today held a meeting with service chiefs in his office at his official residence.
