Unongo Emerges Leader, Zangon Daura Deputy, Ango Remains Spokesman

Former Minister of Steel, Dr. Paul Unongo, has emerged leader and convener of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). At a meeting of the forum in Abuja where the election to pick its executive members, Zangon Daura was also elected deputy leader of NEF, while former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), retained his position as spokesman of the forum.
Speaking on telephone shortly after the forum’s meeting, the new NEF leader, Unongo, said he will continue to protect the interest of the Northern region under a united Nigeria.
The elder statesman said, “I will carry on and implement my late predecessor’s good plans for the North under a united Nigeria. I and my team will also continue to protect the interest of the North.
“We will make sure that Nigeria is more united and peaceful for us to move forward and progress as one great nation. We will continue to promote brotherliness, love and respect for a one Nigeria”.
Commenting on the 2014 national conference report, NEF the new leader said, “We have made our stand on the 2014 national conference very clear. The conference was not the position of Nigerians. The delegates were handpicked by the former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“It was Jonathan’s conference because there was no full representation. We are not against restructuring but we will first know the kind of restructuring. We are not afraid of anybody”.
