Atiku, Makarfi, masterminds of PDP crisis – Lagos chair

  • He just added his voice to heresy – Atiku

Factional chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Segun Adewale, has said the leadership crisis rocking the PDP is being orchestrated by some external forces struggling for the soul of the party, ahead the 2019 presidential election.

He pointedly accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of working from outside to get the PDP nod for the 2019 election, rather than coming back and join hands with other loyal leaders in the ongoing rebuilding effort in the party.

However, the former vice president denied the allegation, saying it was ridiculous and lacking in substance, adding that the factional chairman of the Lagos PDP had “only added his voice to a topic that has remained a heresy”.

Atiku, in his tweeter handle, on Tuesday, simply said, “He didn’t add any substance to this ridiculous and false allegation and we refuse to elevate the topic with a response.”

Adewale, in a statement he personally signed and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, on Tuesday, however insisted that the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction was working with Atiku to destablise PDP.

He also condemned the accusation that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was an agent of the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the accusation was a figment of the imagination of some paid elements within the party, adding, “These agents are working toward the nomination Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as our presidential flag-bearer in the 2019 general election.

“They have resorted to cheap blackmail as it is becoming obvious that the efforts of Ali Modu Sheriff at frustrating every attempt to impose a non-party member as our presidential nominee are beginning to gain the attention of well meaning members.

“This is a case of a pot calling kettle black. How can those promoting the nomination of a known leader of the APC as our presidential flag-bearer accuse another of working for the ruling party?”

According to Adewale, the court-recognised PDP National Caretaker Committee chairman, Senator Ahmed Markafi and his cohorts were the agents working against the interest and progress of the party ahead of 2019 presidential election.

“If you x-ray recent activities in the party and comments of the Markafi-led illegal faction, it is obvious who is working against the general interest of our party. Everything is about Abubakar Atiku’s ambition to be president in 2019,” he said.

The Lagos factional PDP chairman said, if indeed the former vice president and those allegedly promoting him wished to pick the party’s presidential ticket, he should be bold enough to come back to the party they destroyed in the build up to the 2015 general election.

“There is no point going through the back door as there is room within the party for every genuine member seeking political office,” he said, calling on the Markafi-led faction to embrace genuine reconciliation.

“The peace deal that both sides should jointly conduct a new national convention with equal number of members agreed to by both sides failed because Markafi reneged on the proposal that two of them step down and for former President Goodluck Jonathan to head the committee.

“It is unfortunate that it seem while Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is all about rebuilding PDP to a formidable opposition party that can stand against the current charade and political ineptitude of the ruling APC, the other faction is busy negotiating a mega party deal with some aggrieved members of the ruling APC,” he added.
