The former vice president Atiku Abubakar has condemned the Senate's decision to block the bill on the devolution of power to states across Nigeria. Atiku in a series of tweet said the blocked bill is a lost opportunity to fulfill one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) election promises to Nigerians. He said the bill would have been able to deliver the desired changed by shifting power closer to the Nigerian people.
"I’m shocked by some so-called progressives’ visceral and cynical opposition to restructuring. I'm shocked by the reluctance of democratically elected lawmakers to remove structural impediments foisted by decades of military rule," Atiku said. Also speaking on the growing calls for the restructuring of Nigeria, Atiku devolving responsibilities from the federal government is a major step to putting Nigeria on the right track.
"Let me be clear: Restructuring is no panacea to all our problems. But devolving resources and responsibilities from FG is a first step we must make if we are serious about putting our nation back on track, and our people back to work," the former vice president said.
The Senate also voted to give financial and resource autonomy to local government areas in various states of Nigeria. It was also voted that the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) be empowered to de-register any political party that fails to secure and elective seat.
