5 days after S/Court verdict, Senate swears in Lau to replace sacked Sen Danladi

By Aunde T. Emmanuel (eaundeblog)

The Senate on Wednesday swore in Isah Lau as the lawmaker representing Taraba North Senatorial District. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted shortly before the day’s plenary commenced.
It will be recalled that the Supreme Court had on Friday sacked Umar Danladi from the Red Chamber and ordered INEC to issue fresh Certificate of Return to Isah Lau to replace Danladi as the duly elected representative of the senatorial district.
While it ordered the Senate President to swear in Lau as his replacement, the apex court had also ordered Danladi to refund all salaries and/or emoluments which he had collected in the period he occupied the office.
Lau, who came second in the primary held on December 11, 2016, challenged the announcement of Umar, who had been sacked as Acting Governor of Taraba State by the Supreme Court, as the winner of the primary.
Lau had challenged the substitution in the court, arguing that the substitution was unlawful. But before judgment could be delivered in the case, the PDP replaced Lau with Danladi after giving the governorship ticket to Darius Ishaku.
In the lead judgment of a five-man panel headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, the apex court held that Danladi of the Peoples Democratic Party was not a proper candidate of the party in the election.
This followed the verdict of the Appeal Court delivered by Justice Amina Augie, in the lead judgment of a five-man panel, which stated that Danladi was not qualified to have been made a candidate of the PDP in the senatorial election.
